This pretty much sums up my experience singing art-songs and attending conservatory. This is WHY Natalie Dessay is brilliant.

Oh hey high C what’s up? Nice to finally be friends, we’ve been frenemies for so long now I didn’t think we’d ever be a good fit for each other. Never treat me like that again plz. Love you.

Sexism in the standard opera repertoire:
If you’ve heard my “Queen of the night” rant before this is old news for you. She is portrayed as the evil queen who tricks her daughter into loyalty so that she may usurp the crown (when in actuality she is a widow whose power is torn from her when her husband dies and given to a man)
I was watching Turandot today for the first time...

Is it too late to do that “travel around Europe” thing that rich kids do right after college?
Also, do any rich kids want to sponsor me to do that?

I know I’m 23 and young for my profession and I know it takes time
but seeing people your own age and at the same level as you, if that, succeeding ten folds always puts a lump in my throat
and thinking things like “it’s political, they know someone, they are a kiss-ass” does make sense, but it doesn’t ease that urge your head has to explode

Why does singing hurt my esophagus after I eat food with raw onion in it?

Ceclila Bartoli is definitely one of those singers whose performance doesn’t work for the HD Met series.
This woman makes the weirdest and most contorted faces of any other singer alive.
This sucks so much because of how beautiful the sound coming out of her is (besides the freak out coloratura she tends to spring out of no where on occasion)
Put a mask on that woman and put her on the...

Triple-Layered Lemon Bars
I haven’t baked in a few weeks which is a sin
So I thought I’d challenge myself with a new recipe from one of my favorite old cook books, “Mrs. Field’s Best Cookie Book Ever!”
Now. I’ve made Lemon Curd Tart before and also Lemon bars but these were a little different.
This recipe adds a layer of Cream Cheese Filling in between the crust and lemon curd.

A Quick comparison of Handel Opera
You know when a child is in the grocery store screaming and pulling his hair, snot running down his face, his apple juice spilled everywhere and the parent is just standing there. And the parent catches you looking at him and he says with an exaggerated smile, “If he wasn’t so cute when he was asleep I’d just leave him here.”
This is how I feel about Handel’s...

Someone considerably older than myself that I fiercely respect as a singer, woman and human being told me that I had inspired her to start singing again after quite a hiatus. I doubt it was all thanks to me but that little shout out gave me so much happiness.
Keep inspiring others in their art and it will give you all the confidence you need to keep creating!

”My biggest frustration is that the opera business does not take nonmainstream opera seriously” - Lauren Flanigan
One of the major problems with opera, is the practice of staging the bread-and-butter staples year after year. It makes the creative process impossible for directors, singers,…

They herded us into a large room like cattle...
The space was big but felt very small. Looking around, every mouth was open, every voice was ringing. The noise was overwhelming. High screams and low bellowing. Sharp piercing shrieks, lips spitting. I walked to a corner and started using my own voice. Now and then they would come and get one of us, bring them to an elevator and disappear.
Like my new horror story? This is how it starts. No one...

Gabrielle Mirabella: a Flawless Soprano
This is in response to me saying I don’t like when a voice is described as flawless.
Bravo Mike.

The young rising soprano, Gabrielle Mirabella, is making waves in the opera world. She is, perhaps, one of the most flawless artists of our time. Indeed, this flawless young artist could be the next Bryn...

It agitates me when I hear a voice described as “flawless”
The beauty of the voice as an instrument is that unlike it’s brothers made of wood and steel it creates sound that is spontaneous and uncharted.
Yes, the singing I do, Bel Canto, calls for a “flawlessness” in it’s line and color, but even a vibrato is the perfect way to mess around and unbalance...

Made a vocal discovery today that I'm not too...
The last two weeks I was all about working out. Gettin my Pilates on, whippin out crunches like I was ANTM. And at the same time my vocal support was getting weird.
It was sitting higher than usual. I couldn’t feel my lower back expanding and my voice felt shallow and unstable.
Well I haven’t done any ab work in a week (I’m still running though) and guess what, my support is...

Ever feel so depressed your skin actually aches? Got that one today. Instead of taking medicine I’m going to hang out with my toddler niece. Just hearing her say “Abbie” clears up all the adult messes Ive created.
